Faster-than-light travel

"Okay, so at its base level, a hyperdrive allows you to travel great distances by entering and exiting subspace."
- Meredith Rodney McKay - First Contact

A Hyperdrive is a faster-than-light engine.

A hyperdrive accesses subspace and can propel a vessel faster than the speed of light. (SG1: "Within the Serpent's Grasp") A hyperdrive may produce an effect that is detectable in normal space when large enough ships use them. (SG1: "Thor's Chariot") Tel'taks can travel at twice the speed of light, but their engines can be pushed to at least 132% of their maximum capacity. (SG1: "Deadman's Switch", "Tangent") Ha'tak hyperdrives take 125 years to travel over 4 million light years. (SG1: "Exodus") Energies such as those in a supernova can affect the subspace window used by a hyperdrive to accelerate it to over 800 times its original speed. (SG1: "Exodus", "Enemies") Goa'uld hyperdrive use a coolant gas to prevent them from overheating. (SG1: "Revelations") A hyperdrive can be used for short bursts. (SG1: "Fallen") A hyperspace window produces actual particles in space. (SGA: "Search and Rescue") Despite being based on the same technological premise, each race's hyperdrives are different and access a different channel of subspace. The Attero device creates a static in the channel used by the Wraith, destroying the ships when they enter hyperspace. (SGA: "First Contact")

In 1997, the Goa'uld upgraded their hyperdrive technology going from being able to accelerate from 10 times the speed of light to over 3600 times the speed of light. (SG1: "Within the Serpent's Grasp") SG-1 expanded the hyperspace window of a Tel'tak to take an asteroid through Earth to prevent it from hitting the planet. (SG1: "Fail Safe") Area 51 built a hyperspace window generator on the X-302 using Naquadria as a power source but it was unstable. (SG1: "Redemption, Part 1") The hyperdrive installed on the Prometheus was powered with Naquadria and when the Prometheus was hijacked by the Rogue NID they threatened to allow the hyperdrive to overload which would destroy most of Nevada. (SG1: "Prometheus") A hyperdrive was taken from an Al'kesh and installed on the Prometheus in order to get it back to Earth but because it was made for a smaller ship, they needed to make short jumps to not overload it. Samantha Carter dialed down the power on the hyperdrive to cause a partial shift into subspace so the Prometheus could move through a nebula. (SG1: "Grace") Jack O'Neill, using the Ancient knowledge in his mind modified the hyperdrive of a Tel'tak to accelerate its speed. (SG1: "Lost City, Part 2")

Hermiod modified the hyperdive of the Daedalus so it could go faster for a shorter period of time but ran the risk of burning it out. (SGA: "Critical Mass") Some Wraith modified their hyperdrives using information on Lantean hyperdrives to increase their speed and range. (SGA: "Allies", "No Man's Land") When Meredith Rodney McKay was rapidly evolving and become more intelligent, he designed a hyperdrive for the Puddle Jumper. (SGA: "Tao of Rodney")
