"Look, all that hocus-pocus stuff is just a way of getting the brain into the, uh, proper electro-chemical state to allow the final physical evolution. At which point, the matter that makes up this body will turn into pure energy. Oh, what, uh, "mere mortals" would refer to as the "mystery of ascension", is actually just a-a scientific process. Just protons and electrons. Protons and electrons."
- Meredith Rodney McKay - Tao of Rodney

Ascension is a process where a person's body converts to energy and they exist on a higher plane of existence.

Overview

Meditation

Process

Naturally reaching ascension requires a person to be sufficiently evolved and they must make a willing and conscious effort to achieve it. (SGA: "Tao of Rodney", SG1: "Meridian", "Abyss", "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1") A person needs to have 80-90% synaptic activity in the brain and has to reach an Electroencephalogram frequency of 0.1 to 0.9 hertz. The process is usually achieved through meditation. (SG1: "Prototype", SGA: "Tao of Rodney", "Epiphany") Once they achieve these they are capable of transforming their body into energy, inhabiting a dimension different from regular space-time, where they can be affected by certain energies. (SGA: "Tao of Rodney", SG1: "Camelot") Humans are capable of reaching ascension by devoting their lives to the task. (SGA: "Epiphany") People can be ascended by other ascended beings without them needing to be evolved, but possibly requires the person to make the decision to ascend otherwise it won't happen. (SG1: "Meridian", "Abyss") When lower beings relinquish their free will to ascended beings in mass quantities, the ascended beings can siphon a form of energy from them which increases their power. Those with extra power seem to be able to overpower other ascended beings. (SG1: "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1", Stargate: The Ark of Truth) There exists partially ascended (P.A.) beings as well, who can exist in a different plane than other ascended beings. (SG1: "Threads", "Lockdown")

Abilities

Once ascended a being can chose to present themselves in any way they want, e.g. a normal human appearance, a flowing light, flames, or in the appearance of others. They can also make other things appear, such as buildings and items. (SG1: "Abyss", "Maternal Instinct", "Full Circle", Stargate: The Ark of Truth) Ascension does not make someone all-knowing as the universe is infinite and it is impossible to keep track of everything. (SG1: "Abyss", "Origin") They can affect the physical world, from being able to summon lighting and heal lower beings. (SG1: "Maternal Instinct", SGA: "Epiphany", Stargate: The Ark of Truth) They can enter the minds of lower beings to communicate with them and show them a variety of things. (SG1: "The Changeling", Stargate: The Ark of Truth) They can choose to retake a mortal form, usually having to give up their knowledge as their mortal bodies cannot contain it as well as losing any advanced abilities. (SG1: "Ascension", "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1", "The Quest, Part 2") They have a process known as Sharing where they can share their innermost essence and are capable of performing this with lower beings. (SG1: "Ascension", SGA: "Sanctuary")

Known ascended beings

History

Some Ancients ascended to escape the Ancient plague. (SG1: "Full Circle") The Ori learned to ascend and used their powers to create the Priors and the Origin religion and get humans to worship them, discovering that a willingness by lower beings to give up their free will allowed them to siphon energy from them. (SG1: "Avalon, Part 2", "Origin", "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1") The Lanteans researched ascension by studying an energy entity on Atlantis. (SGA: "Hide and Seek") The collective of the ascended, known as the Others, set rules that they would not interfere with lower beings. (SG1: "Full Circle", "Ascension") Teer's people found a Time dilation field on a planet and moved there to meditate to reach ascension. (SGA: "Epiphany") Anubis tricked Oma Desala into helping him ascend and after she realized what she had done, she tried to undo it but could not. The Others forced him partially back and as punishment for Oma they warned him not to use any knowledge or abilities he would otherwise have had as a Goa'uld. (SG1: "Full Circle", "Lockdown", "Threads") Moros began to believe that the Ori were a threat to the Others so he retook human form to work on a weapon to destroy them. (SG1: "Arthur's Mantle")

Orlin used his abilities to communicate knowledge to the Velonans so they could construct a weapon to stop a Goa'uld attack. The Others destroyed the Velonans after they planned to conquer other worlds and banished Orlin to Velona to be alone. (SG1: "Ascension") A temple on Kheb was constructed to allow people to gain instruction on how to ascend. Oma Desala resided here with the Harcesis Shifu. When the Monk caretaker of the temple was killed he ascended. (SG1: "Maternal Instinct") Shifu appeared to have ascended powers. (SG1: "Absolute Power") Orlin took human form again but after he stopped the Velonan Weapon from being used again, the Others ascended him again. (SG1: "Ascension") Daniel Jackson was helped to reach ascension by Oma Desala. (SG1: "Meridian") Jackson later offered to help Jack O'Neill ascend to escape from being tortured by Ba'al. (SG1: "Abyss") When the Abydonians were dying, Oma began ascending them and when Abydos was destroyed, she ascended them all. (SG1: "Full Circle") When Jackson tried to destroy Anubis Oma stopped him, turned him back into a human and blocked his memories to prevent the Others from interfering. (SG1: "Full Circle", "Fallen")

When Jackson was killed by Replicator Carter Oma created the Astral Diner to speak to Jackson about him being able to ascend again, with the Others being present to watch her. After Jackson tried to stop Anubis himself, Oma stepped in and engaged him in eternal combat, preventing him from ever doing anything else. (SG1: "Threads") Teer's people had to overcome their fear of The Beast before they were able to ascend. (SGA: "Epiphany") Many Asurans hoped to ascend as part of their emulation of the Lanteans. (SGA: "Progeny") The Sangraal was sent to the Ori galaxy which destroyed the Ori. (SG1: "The Shroud") After a Ba'al clone implanted in Adria was removed, he released a toxin that caused Adria to begin to die. She focused her energy on ascension and managed to achieve it before dying. (SG1: "Dominion") The Asgard had altered their genetics and made it so they could never reach ascension. (SG1: "Unending") Adria gained all the collective power of the Ori after she ascended and became so powerful that Ganos Lal was unable to take her on. When the Ark of Truth convinced the Ori followers that they were not gods, Adria lost all her extra power so Ganos engaged her in eternal combat. (Stargate: The Ark of Truth)

A splinter group of the Asurans sought ascension so they created an Atlantis duplicate and made duplicates of Sheppard's team and Elizabeth Weir to study their humanity and the concept of a "soul" that they believed was needed for them to reach enlightenment. (SGA: "This Mortal Coil") Elizabeth Weir led the survivors of Niam's group to try to reach ascension. Koracen came up with a digital solution by uploading the consciousnesses to subspace where he believed they could reach a higher level one day. (SGA: "Ghost in the Machine")
