Biography

Early life

In 1969, Hammond was a Lieutenant and watched the moon landing from beside his father's hospital bed after he had a heart attack. A few weeks later he was stationed at Cheyenne Mountain Complex when four people were found inside and detained. While looking over their gear, he found a note in his own handwriting that said "Help them." and had two dates on it. He arranged for the truck transporting them to get a flat tire so he could speak to them, who told him that they came from the future and he was the one who sent them. He had concealed a Zat'nik'tel in the truck and gave it to them so they could escape. While removing the handcuffs from the woman, he noticed a cut on her hand and one of them asked him to give him some money and that he would pay him back with interest. He was shot with the zat, so that no one would know he helped them and not be court martialled. (SG1: "1969") He met Henry Hayes when they were both Lieutanants. (SG1: "Lost City, Part 1") He served during the Vietnam War and saw his best friend get shot down and knew that he survived, but never learned what happened to him. (SG1: "Revelations") Hammond served with Jacob Carter during the Cold War. (SG1: "Secrets") He lost his wife to cancer in 1993 and has two granddaughters Tessa and Kayla. (SG1: "Tin Man") Hammond was planning on retiring in March of 1997. (SG1: "Within the Serpent's Grasp")

Stargate Command

Hammond was put in command of the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, taking over from General W. O. West. An alarm was sounded on the base and Hammond made his way with the security forces to Level 28, seeing a man leading two others, and a kidnapped soldier through the Stargate, briefly witnessing the man's eyes glow before he retreated. He recalled Jack O'Neill and asked him if he had anything to add to his report of the mission to Abydos, informing O'Neill that he was planning on sending a nuclear bomb through to make sure any hostile forces were destroyed. O'Neill said that his report wasn't correct as while Ra was destroyed, the bomb detonated on his ship which was in orbit and that Daniel Jackson and the Abydonians were still alive. Hammond had O'Neill locked up but came to him to ask how many Abydonians lived on Abydos, reconsidering sending the bomb. Hammond wanted to send a probe but O'Neill remarked that there was another option. They sent a box of tissues through which was eventually sent back empty with a message to send more and Hammond authorized a reconnaissance mission. (SG1: "Children of the Gods")

He had the Iris installed on the Stargate, to prevent any unauthorized people from coming through. Hammond announced that the President had authorized the formation of nine teams to explore worlds through the Stargate, giving O'Neill command of SG-1 and Major Charles Kawalsky command of SG-2. He ordered a mission to Chulak to gain informtion on the Goa'uld and rescue Jackson's wife Sha're and her brother Skaara who had been kidnapped. As the 24 hour deadline to come back approached, Hammond grew worried and when Major Samuels told him the deadline had passed he wanted to wait a few more minutes. He relented and ordered the Iris sealed but SG-1, SG-2 and several refugees came through in time. O'Neill introduced Hammond to Teal'c, recommending that he join SG-1 but Hammond stated that it probably won't be his decision. (SG1: "Children of the Gods")

Hammond met with Colonel Kennedy who interviewed Teal'c about his experiences serving the Goa'uld, and had orders to take Teal'c back with him for further interviews and study of his symbiote. When it was discovered that Kawalsky had been infested with a Goa'uld Hammond ordered it to be removed but the surgery failed as the Goa'uld tricked them and shed a husk that was removed instead. When the Goa'uld attempted to escape through the Stargate and was stopped by Teal'c, Hammond had Kennedy's orders rescinded by the President and had Teal'c join SG-1. (SG1: "The Enemy Within") A virus introduced to the SGC began to spread and Hammond ordered a lockdown before calling the President and recommending he create a second line of defense around the mountain. He became infected by this virus and had to be put in a straitjacket and into isolation until a cure was developed. (SG1: "The Broca Divide")

After a duplicte of O'Neill was discovered to have come through the Stargate, Hammond sent SG-1 to track it down, giving Teal'c a cap to wear to cover his forehead emblem. (SG1: "Cold Lazarus") Hammond and SG-1 met Secretary of Defense Swift to show him the SGC and the Stargate and then authorized a mission for SG-1 to capture a creature that could make itself invisible. (SG1: "The Nox") O'Neill became infected with nanites that caused him to age rapidly, and a sample of the nanites brought back to Earth attempted to escape containment, so Hammond ordered the samples all destroyed to prevent their spread. (SG1: "Brief Candle") After it was discovered that a man, Ernest Littlefield, had gone through the Stargate in 1945, Hammond authorized a mission to rescue him and allowed Catherine Langford, the man's fiance, to go along with them. (SG1: "The Torment of Tantalus") Teal'c revealed that he had a family back on Chulak and attempted to go back to get them, but Hammond wouldn't allow it, stating that if he went alone he would probably end up dead. He authorized SG-1 to go to help him with the potential of collecting a symbiote for study. (SG1: "Bloodlines")

When SG-1 returned without Jackson, stating that he had been killed, Hammond wanted to get them back into another mission right away but Dr. Janet Fraiser wanted several days off for them to recover. At the wake for Jackson, O'Neil smashed the windshield of Hammond's car in frustration and Hammond approached him to tell him that he wanted SG-1 to close out Jackson's apartment, before informing O'Neill that it was his car he hit. When it was revealed that Jackson was alive and SG-1's memories were faked, he allowed them to return to bring him home. (SG1: "Fire and Water") Hammond fell under the influence of the Goa'uld Hathor and let her control the SGC, but when she was forced to flee through the Stargte, he regained control. (SG1: "Hathor") After a bomb was found in the sole survivor of a plague on Hanka, Hammond contacted the Secretary of Defense for permission to take her to a nuclear storage facility so if the bomb exploded there would be less damage. (SG1: "Singularity") When Teal'c was put on trial for a murder committed while serving Apophis, Hammond called the President for authorization for a rescue mission but was denied. (SG1: "Cor-ai")

Hammond met with the Tollan Omoc after SG-1 rescued him and some of his people, wanting to find a place for them to go and scheduling a meeting with High Councilor Tuplo which did not go well. When Colonel Harry Maybourne from the NID arrived to take the Tollan away, Hammond lied and said that they hadn't gone through quarantine yet so he couldn't release them, giving SG-1 time to help them get through the Stargate. (SG1: "Enigma") When the Stargate overloaded and the mechanisms connected to the Stargate were destroyed, Hammond ordered them repaired so a rescue mission for O'Neill and Samantha Carter could be undertaken. When it was discovered that they had actually come through a second Stargate hidden in Antarctica, Hammond went with Jackson and Teal'c to help locate them. He ordered a team from the SGC to go to the location to secure the Stargate. (SG1: "Solitudes") Synthetic duplicates of SG-1 came back from a mission and when discovered, Hammond had them locked up. When he said he was sending another team to find out what happened the O'Neill duplicate warned him not to as the team would probably be duplicated as well; when the duplicates began to collapse, Hammond allowed them to go back, later the real SG-1 returned to Earth. (SG1: "Tin Man")

When Senator Robert Kinsey ended the funding for the SGC, the President asked him to meet with SG-1 and Hammond to get their opinions on why the SGC needed to continue, but it failed and the SGC was shut down. (SG1: "Politics") Hammond went to see Kinsey twice, the second time he was forcibly removed from Kisney's office; he also went to see the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the President but nothing could be done. After SG-1 went through the Stargate to a location Jackson had discovered in an alternat reality that a Goa'uld attack originated from, Hammond allowed Ferretti and SG-2 to go after them but the address didn't work. When two Goa'uld Ha'taks were detected headed to Earth, Hammond briefed a group being sent offworld to the Alpha Site and helped coordinate with other armed forces for when the attack begun. Hammond believed that SG-1 was aboard one of the ships and was against the launch of two weapons against the ship; the weapons struck the ships shields and they were undamaged. The two ships were destroyed in orbit as Jackson came through the Stargate telling Hammond that they were aboard the ships. The rest of SG-1 escaped aboard Death gliders and were brought back to the SGC where Hammond showed them Jackson, who they assumed had died aboard the ships. (SG1: "Within the Serpent's Grasp", "The Serpent's Lair")

1998

When they rescued the Nasyans from a Goa'uld attack, Hammond had SG-1 join SG-10, SG-11 and SG-12 to look for relocation sites for them. After it was discovered that a symbiote had taken control of Carter, Hammond had other personnel examined for other symbiotes and the base checked for explosives or tampering. (SG1: "In the Line of Duty") When SG-1 were sentenced and sent to the prison planet Hadante, Hammond decided to join the negotiation team to speak with the Taldor, offering to take SG-1's place but he was refused; Hammond told them that if SG-1 weren't returned all diplomatic relatios would end with them. (SG1: "Prisoners") After Jackson became addicted to the effects of a sarcophagus, O'Neill and Carter recommended to Hammond that he deny letting Jackson go back through the Stargate. (SG1: "Need") When it was discovered that Cimmeria had been invaded by the Goa'uld, Hammond was hesitant to allow SG-1 to go there to help but was convinced by the team to authorize the mission. (SG1: "Thor's Chariot")

An Orb was brought back to Earth that started to release an organism, Hammond enacted the Wildfire directive to lockdown the mountain and denied Dr. Janet Fraiser's request to have new medicines brought inside stating the lockdown meant no one in and no one out. When a containment breach was detected, the auto-destruct automatically activated and the organisms began to affect the computers and prevented them from disabling the auto-destruct. The organisms communicated with them and an agreement was reached to allow them through the Stargate to a primordial world so that both of them could live. (SG1: "Message in a Bottle") Bra'tac came to Earth and told Teal'c that Apophis had kidnapped his son, Rya'c, and Hamond authorized SG-1 to go rescue him and bring him and Teal'c's wife Drey'auc back to Earth. (SG1: "Family")

O'Neill and Carter were awarded the Air Medal to be presented to them by the President in Washington, D.C. and Hammond attended the reception, inviting Jacob Carter to attend as a surprise for Carter. He was told by O'Neill who told him a reporter had approached him with information about the Stargate and Hammond ordered him to find out what the reporter knew. When the reporter was hit by a car and killed, O'Neill and Carter were given the medals in a private ceremony at the SGC. (SG1: "Secrets") Hammond was forced to allow Colonel Maybourne to take Teal'c when he wa stung by an alien insect that began to alter his DNA; Hammond later had Maybourne's orders overturned by the President. (SG1: "Bane") With SG-1 off searching for the Tok'ra, Hammond got a call from Jacob who was in the hospital and in a bad condition, so Hammond sent SG-3 to find SG-1 and bring Carter back. (SG1: "The Tok'ra, Part 1") Carter and O'Neill returned and asked to bring Jacob to the Tok'ra to become a host to save his life, Hammond got permission to let Jacob know about the Stargate. When Jacob returned, having blended with the Tok'ra Selmak, he told Hammond that he had made the right choice in trusting the Tok'ra. (SG1: "The Tok'ra, Part 2")

When the Salish did not want SG teams mining the Trinium on their world, Hammond was ordered to send teams back when the Salish migrated for winter in order to mine it without them knowing and Hammond was shortly after taken away by the Spirits, guardians of the Salish. He was later returned with others taken away when the Spirits agreed to bury their Stargate instead. (SG1: "Spirits") When SG-1 returned and O'Neill informed Hammond that the Touchstone from Madrona had been stolen, Hammond didn't appreciate the implication that maybe he had sent another team there to take it and allowed SG-1 to begin an investigation into the event; sending them to Area 51 to check on the second Stargat stored there. Hammond met with an old acquaintance, Whitlow, to learn the possible location of the second Stargate which had disappeared from Area 51; when it was recovered he presided over a team to weld a permanent Iris onto it to prevent its unauthorized usage. (SG1: "Touchstone")

After O'Neill had the Repository of Knowledge uploaded into his mind and began inputting something into the computer, Hammond ordered him to stop but he couldn't, so Hammond had grab hold of him. He authorized SG teams to begin visiting the new planets O'Neill input into the computer to try to make contact with the Ancients so they could help O'Neill. When the computer dialed an 8th Chevron address, Hammond wanted to stop O'Neill from going through but allowed him as there was nothing they could do for him but wouldn't give him a GDO as they didn't know where he was going; O'Neill returned, the knowledge being removed from his mind. (SG1: "The Fifth Race") When the SGC dialed into a planet being sucked into a black hole, Hammond was unable to call the President so he went upstairs to try again and was met by Major Paul Davis who had been sent to try to make contact with Hammond. He was taken to a plane and went to see the President in person and was briefed on a plan to destroy the SGC and the Stargate to prevent Earth's destruction. Returning to the SGC, Hammond ordered the base evacuated and they went outside to wait but the plan was scrapped when Carter came up with a way to save Earth and the SGC. (SG1: "A Matter of Time")

SG-1 returned with a badly injured Apophis and Hammond gave ordered for him to be interrogated for information. When a Sagan Institute box was sent through the Stargate and hit the Iris, Hammond authorized the Iris to be opened later to allow the Tok'ra to come to the SGC. He was not willing to send Apophis back through the Stargate to Sokar opting for intelligence to be gathered before Apophis died of his injuries. When Sokar began an attack on the Iris, Hammond was ordered to stop all medical intervention on Apophis and to return him through the Stargate as soon as possible. With Apophis in his custody, Sokar stopped his attack on Earth. (SG1: "Serpent's Song") When aliens began to fall ill after encountering SG-1, Hammond stated a potential pathogen being released was inevitable and that they can't devote too much time and resources to the situation as the aliens were all dying; luckily a solution was found. (SG1: "One False Step")

When someone dialed into Earth and the Iris opened on its own, Hammond ordered it closed but it opened again immediately and a small child came through. The child warned them of an attack from the Reetou, an invisible race, and Hammond ordered Carter and Jackson to signal the Tok'ra to come to Earth to help. (SG1: "Show and Tell") As SG-1 was leaving on a mission, Hammond noticed a cut on Carter's hand and knew that the team was going to be sent back in time to 1969 and gave Carter a note that his past self would find. When SG-1 was reported never arriving at their destination, he sent SG-5 to complete their mission. When SG-1 returned, Hammond informed that that he had been waiting for this day since he first met them and considered not sending them on the mission in the first place. He informed O'Neill that with interest, he owed Hammond five hundred thirty-nine dollars and fifty cents. (SG1: "1969")

SG-1 disappeared on a mission with Teal'c being found severely injured. He authorized search missions but nothing was found. When Teal'c regained consciousness three weeks later, he wanted to return to continue the search but Hammond wouldn't allow him. Teal'c decided to leave the SGC to find allies to locate SG-1, Hammond refused to allow it but eventually relented and had an honor guard arranged as Teal'c left. (SG1: "Out of Mind") When Hammond learned that SG-1 had been taken by Hathor and the rescue teams were captured, he went to Chulak to find Teal'c and his allies to rescue them. He rode in a Needle threader with Teal'c, firing the weapons to destroy the Staff cannon towers that Hathor had to rescue the captured SG teams. (SG1: "Into the Fire")

1999

After Jacob Carter came to Earth to locate the Goa'uld Seth, Hammond asked why he wouldn't have tried to get to the Stargate at some point but Jacob said that he was wanted by the System Lords and could easily hide on Earth. After finding Seth, SG-1 and Jacob were stopped by ATF Special Agent James Hamner and O'Neill contacted Hammond who in turn contacted the President to get O'Neill put in charge. (SG1: "Seth") Hammond oversaw a ceremony to promote Carter to the rank of Major. Hammond first met Thor when he arrived to inform them that the System Lords had agreed to meet on Earth to negotiate for Earth to be included in the Protected Planets Treaty. When Cronus, one of the System Lords, was attacked, Hammond refused to allow the others to go as it would mean an attack on Earth would be launched. He allowed SG-1 to inform the others that they had found out that one of them had attacked Cronus and with this information succeeded at the negotiations. (SG1: "Fair Game")

When Jackson began to exhibit signs of Schizophrenia and it may have been because of Stargate travel, Hammond ordered operations shut down as a precaution. When some of Ma'chello's Goa'uld-killing organisms escaped into O'Neill, Carter and Fraiser, Hammond wouldn't allow them out of lockdown to prevent them from spreading. (SG1: "Legacy") Hammond was not willing to hold Merrin against her will after it was revealed that when she returns to her world she will have the nanites in her brain removed, leaving her in an infant-like state. When he learned that O'Neill had taken Merrin he tried to order the base to prevent him from leaving but he had already left. Hammond decided not to punish O'Neill for what he did. (SG1: "Learning Curve") When an alternate reality Carter and Kawalsky arrived through the Quantum Mirror, Hammond recommended that they join the SGC and it was approved but after Carter began to experience Entropic cascade failure, Hammond allowed a mission back to their reality to save their world and help them return. (SG1: "Point of View")

Hammond met Rophiapgisy, who had been leading SG-X in their training. After being shown that Apophis was not a god and was dead, he talked to Hammond and SG-1, telling them about the final challenge his team would go through to prove themselves to Apophis. He asked Hammond for permission to return with SG-1 to stop his men from killing one another and Hammond authorized it. (SG1: "Rules of Engagement") Hammond met Ke'ra when she and two Vyans arrived to help with finding a solution to the amnesia affecting them. When it was revealed that Ke'ra was Linea, Hammond ordered more security and later allowed her to help find the solution when they could not. (SG1: "Past and Present") After being told that Jacob had been captured by Sokar and had vital information about Sokar's fleet, Hammond authorized SG-1 to join Martouf in rescuing him. (SG1: "Jolinar's Memories")

Aliens infiltrate the SGC and Hammond is duplicated with a Mimic device by the Alien Leader. He and all the others are later freed when the aliens are defeated. (SG1: "Foothold") Hammond allows the Tollan Narim to enter the SGC and then authorizes SG-1 to go with him to Tollana to take part in the Triad for Skaara. (SG1: "Pretense") After SG-1 comes back from a mission with no recollection of what happened and it is discovered that they have devices implanted in their brains that allows them to communicate with the artificial intelligence Urgo, Hammond takes them off duty as they are compromised. He authorizes them to return to the planet where it happened after contacting the creator to have them removed. They returned again with no memory of what happened on the planet. (SG1: "Urgo") He authorized the Edorans to come to Earth when it was discovered that their planet would be hit with meteor strikes and than later allowed Carter to work on a plan to rescue O'Neill who became trapped on the planet when a meteor hit the Stargate. (SG1: "A Hundred Days")

Hammond was part of a ploy to have O'Neill infiltrate the Rogue NID who had been stealing technology from allies, having been approached by several of them who claimed that Earth was stealing from them. O'Neill stole some technology from the Tollan and Hammond forced him into retirement. He appointed Colonel Makepeace to lead SG-1 and was later asked by O'Neill to be allowed to retire offworld on Edora. O'Neill later came back to Earth leading the rogue NID who were arrested. (SG1: "Shades of Grey") When SG-1 were captured by the People of P2X-416, Hammond spoke to Commander Rigar to try to negotiate for their release, but Rigar refused to believe he was on another planet and told him that if any rescue mission took place, he would kill SG-1. The team managed to escape on their own. (SG1: "New Ground") He authorized SG-1 to go to Kheb when its location had been discovered and sent SG-2 with them for backup. (SG1: "Maternal Instinct")

When Jackson disappeared after looking into a Crystal skull, Hammond authorized Teal'c to return to collect it to try to determine what happened to him. When Dr. Robert Rothman was tasked with examining the skull and was skeptical to its transportation properties, Hammond got angered and ordered him to examine it and report in 12 hours. He received a call from his granddaughter Kayla who told him that she had lost a tooth and asked if he could come to her school play but he said that he couldn't as Jackson was lost and he had to find him. He allowed Nicholas Ballard to be brought to the SGC and shown the skull and was later approached by Ballard who claimed that Jackson was standing beside him but they couldn't see him and used the call from Kayla as proof that Jackson was there. Hammond authorized SG-1 and Ballard to return to P7X-377 to get Jackson back. (SG1: "Crystal Skull")

After O'Neill was beamed away to the Biliskner in orbit, he contacted Hammond and requested a supply of weapons and explosives to take out the ship, which had been taken over by the Replicators. He said that no one else could come up as it would mean they would have to remain as the ship was destroyed, Hammond overrode O'Neill allowing Carter and Teal'c to go as a plan was made to evacuate them on a Space Shuttle. Hammond wanted to give SG-1 a chance to destroy the ship and escape before the ship was targeted and destroyed by Earth-based forces. When Jackson revealed that he felt wrong not being with the rest of SG-1, Hammond remarked that's how he felt most of the time sending SG teams offworld. When SG-1 beamed the Stargate away as a means of escape instead, Hammond ordered the Beta Stargate unpacked and sent to the SGC. (SG1: "Nemesis")

2000

When the second Stargate was finally set up, SG-1 returned, Hammond commended them on a job well done protecting Earth. Hammond shorty afterwards called them to a meeting when a Replicator had been found to have survived the crash and taken over a Russian submarine. He authorized Samantha Carter to go with Thor through the Stargate to help in stopping a Replicator attack on his homeworld. (SG1: "Small Victories") After someone kept trying to communicate with the SGC through the Stargate, Hammond communicated with them that they had an Iris and anyone that had been sent through was now dead. He allowed SG-1 to go to the planet to offer humanitarian aid as the people were at war. When Carter and Jackson returned, requesting some supplies, Jackson had misgivings about helping them in their war and Hammond agreed, wanting to know more about the war and the enemy. (SG1: "The Other Side")

Hammond authorized for O'Neill, Carter and Jackson to test the Atoniek Armbands that made them faster and stronger, brought to them by the Tok'ra Anise. At recommendations from Dr. Janet Fraiser he ordered them to remove the armbands but they could not be removed. When O'Neill came to him wanting to be able to use them to fight the Goa'uld, Hammond told O'Neill that he believe he wasn't in full control of his abilities and told him to get out of his office. When O'Neill accidentally injured Sgt. Dan Siler, he had them all contained in a VIP room but they escaped and ended up in a bar fight. When Anise came to Hammond stating that a mission had suddenly come up to destroy a new battleship being built by Apophis, but Hammond didn't believe it was new information and that the situation had been manipulated so SG-1 would do the mission. SG-1 went on the mission anyway, and after learning that the armbands woulc soon fail, Hammond ordered Teal'c to follow them to offer help. When they returned, Hammond stated that they were clearly under the effect of alien technology that altered their behaviors and as such would not be disciplined. (SG1: "Upgrades")

When the Jaffa Shaun'auc came to Earth stating that she had communicated with her symbiote and turned it against the Goa'uld, and asked for help in contacting the Tok'ra, Hammond refused as he was among those unconvinced as to what she was claiming. He later allowed the Tok'ra to come to Earth to discuss it. (SG1: "Crossroads") After learning about Za'tarcs, assassins programmed by the Goa'uld, Hammond allowed Freya and Martouf to test members of the SGC to find any. When one was located, Hammond gave her the choice to undergo the removal procedure or not, but it failed and her programming activated and she killed herself. After testing everyone else, O'Neill and Carter were identified as well. Hammond allowed the summit with the Tok'ra to go forward and met with Supreme High Councilor Per'sus when he arrived on Earth and then left to meet with a body double of the President and escort him to the summit. After arriving, the fake President was attacked by Martouf, who was also a Za'tarc. After he was stopped, Hammond revealed that the President was a fake and called for the real President to come. (SG1: "Divide and Conquer")

He was caught in a time loop, not remembering anything that occurred until the final loop where O'Neill and Teal'c revealed that had been living the same 10 hours over and over and then worked with Jackson to translate some writings to determine that the machine responsible for the loop doesn't work as intended and he authorized SG-1 to go and put a stop to it. (SG1: "Window of Opportunity") When the Stargate stopped working and it was discovered that the Russians were operating their own Stargate, Hammond contacted The Pentagon who contacted the Russians. Hammond told SG-1 that they had been requested to travel to Russia to help them shut down their Stargate. (SG1: "Watergate") When Jackson was kidnapped by an Unas, Hammond authorized SG-1 and SG-2 to go and help locate him. (SG1: "The First Ones") When the Enkarans were threatened by a terraforming shi, Hammond wouldn't authorize military force against it and instructed O'Neill to find another way. (SG1: "Scorched Earth")

After SG-1 went missing on P3R-118, Hammond asked Administrator Calder for permission to send SG-2 to look for SG-1. Major Griff told Hammond that there was no way that SG-1 would have gone out to the glacier like they were told and Hammond had Griff begin planning a mission to discreetly search for them on the planet. (SG1: "Beneath the Surface") When a man claimed to have knowledge of the Stargate, Hammond sent SG-1 to investigate. (SG1: "Point of No Return") Hammond and Major Davis took Lieutenant General Vidrine to see the test flight of the X-301 but on its second test flight it left the atmosphere and headed out into space. He authorized Carter and Jackson to go offworld to try to find a Tok'ra operative with access to a ship to rescue the two. Jacob Carter was the Tok'ra and the three managed to rescue O'Neill and Teal'c. (SG1: "Tangent")

When O'Neill took Teal'c fishing, Hammond asked Teal'c to take a cell phone in the event they are needed. Carter examined a canopic jar with Goa'uld writings on it, and Hammond was shocked that there was a symbiote inside. Another jar had gone missing and Hammond sent Carter, Jackson and Dr. Fraiser to follow the man that may have opened it and been taken over. (SG1: "The Curse") When Apophis and Heru'ur were meeting to discuss an alliance, Hammond authorized SG-1 to go with Jacob to disrupt it. (SG1: "The Serpent's Venom")

Hammond was approached a member of the Rogue NID who wanted him to be more aggressive about obtaining alien technology but when Hammond refused, his granddaughters were picked up by strange men at school and dropped off at home. Rather than give in to their demands, Hammond resigned to protect his family. When O'Neill came to see him, Hammond revealed what happened. O'Neill managed to get information that stopped the Rogue NID from going after Hammond's family, allowing him to be reinstated. (SG1: "Chain Reaction") When a note arrived through the Stargate from some time in the future written by O'Neill warning them not to go to P4C-970, Hammond had the planet locked out of the computer. (SG1: "2010") When the Harcesis Shifu became energy and made his way to the Stargate, O'Neill recommended that Hammond order everyone to get out of the way. (SG1: "Absolute Power")

On recommendation of Fraiser, Hammond authorized O'Neill to take Jackson back to P4X-347 to save his life as he was addicted to a device on the planet and then contacted them to ask if they needed any supplies. (SG1: "The Light") Hammond allowed Carter to take Cadet Jennifer Hailey offworld as Carter recommended that Hailey would be a worthy officer to serve under him. (SG1: "Prodigy") When an Entity invaded the SGC, Hammond wanted it destroyed but was convinced to open communication with it first. After it transferred into Carter, he asked Fraiser to try to come up with a way to remove it. He later ordered the memory mainframe the Entity contracted destroyed. (SG1: "Entity") When Harlan came to Earth wanting help to find the synthetic duplicates of SG-1, Hammond authorized SG-1 to go after their duplicates as they represented a security risk. (SG1: "Double Jeopardy") Hammond had SG-1 allow the Tok'ra to use Cronus' Ha'tak, that they had capture, to move to another planet. (SG1: "Exodus") When SG-1 didn't return from their mission to take out Apophis' fleet, the Tok'ra Ren'al came to Earth to talk to Hammond, telling them that they believe they had been killed but the mission had succeeded. Hammond told her that he would hold out a bit longer as SG-1 had a surprising good habit of beating the odds. (SG1: "Enemies")

2001

To overcome the brainwashing done by Apophis to Teal'c, Bra'tac removed Teal'c's symbiote to put him through the Rite of M'al Sharran. After explaining what he was attempting, Hammond authorized it to happen. Hammond told O'Neill that if it didn't work, Teal'c would need to be locked up but he would eventually die when his symbiote matured and that Hammond didn't want to put him through all that. The rite succeeded and Teal'c regained his freedom, requesting to rejoin SG-1 to which Hammond granted. (SG1: "Threshold") Hammond took Carter's recommendation not to immediately activate the weapon found on Velona and gave her two weeks to run her simulations and tests, but he was overridden by the President after 9 days. (SG1: "Ascension")

When SG-1 returned without O'Neill and claimed there to be a fifth member of the team, Hammond had them checked out, explaining that no such member existed at the SGC. When Colonel Frank Simmons came to investigate SG-1, Hammond made some calls to learn who he really worked for and learned enough to know that his involvement was political. He confronted Simmons who didn't seem to care. (SG1: "The Fifth Man") In order to save K'Tau from a problem accidentally caused by the SGC, Hammond contacted people to get a Rocket being constructed to be transported to the SGC. (SG1: "Red Sky") When Nirrti was captured infiltrating the SGC, Hammond and O'Neill tried to make a deal with her to save Cassandra's life but Hammond wasn't willing to agree to her demands. Hammond was called to Nirrti's holding cell where Dr. Fraiser was threatening to kill Nirrti if she didn't help, Hammond told Nirrti that Fraiser was Cassandra's mother and making a deal would save her life. After finding where Carter was located, Hammond sent Jackson and Teal'c to join O'Neill. (SG1: "Desperate Measures") When the show Wormhole X-Treme! was being created, Hammond told SG-1 that the Air Force allowed it as it helped them claim plausible deniability in the event of future breaches about the program. He had Fraiser examine some vitamins that Martin Lloyd had and she found the same chemical used last time to block his memories. (SG1: "Wormhole X-Treme!") As part of the SGC was shut down for a training exercise for new SGC recruits, Hammond watched with Brigadier General Kerrigan and the two made a wager if the recruits would succeed. He congratulated the recruits on their success and when another exercise took place specifically for Lt. Elliot who went back to the gateroom to rescue Lt. Hailey, Hammond ordered him to come back but he rescued her anyway. The entire things was revealed as a test to him and Hammond told him that SG team members are required to go above and beyond the call of duty and that Elliot had just demonstrated that, appointing him to SG-17. When SG-3 reported that a mothership was attacking, he told them to maintain control of the Stargate for as long as possible before retreating back to Earth. (SG1: "The Sentinel") After Jackson was exposed to a fatal amount of radiation, Hammond refused to allow O'Neill to go on a suicide mission to recover a Sarcophagus to save his life. He was ordered to try to maintain relations with Kelowna so Earth could obtain some of their Naquadria and he sent O'Neill back with a letter. Hammond told Jack O'Neill that he should find someone qualified to join the team or else a Russian officer will be put on the team. When the Stargate was dialed into and began building up energy and would eventually explode, Hammond had everyone work on the issue. When O'Neill and Carter were going to take the X-302 to Abydos to get help, Jonas Quinn told him that its Hyperdrive wouldn't work as the Naquadria powering it was unstable, but Hammond said that they had no choice but to try. (SG1: "Redemption, Part 1") He authorized Meredith Rodney McKay to enact a plan to use an Electromagnetic pulse to try to disable the weapon being used to attack the Stargat but it didn't work. Carter developed a plan to strap the Stargate to the X-302 and send it into space to detonate safely. When Chekov said that the US could arrange to rent the Russian Stargate, Hammond told him that until they had a defense against this weapon they could never use the Stargate. The plan worked but without a Stargate the SGC was shut down and Hammond began packing up his office. Teal'c returned and reported that they had destroyed the weapon which allowed the US to purchase the Russian Stargate, for among other things a Russian officer joining SG-1. O'Neill instead chose Jonas to join SG-1. (SG1: "Redemption, Part 2")

(SG1: "Metamorphosis") Hammond went to The Pentagon for a summit with ambassadors from Great Britain, France and China to inform them of the Stargate Program in the hopes of forming a coalition to help defend Earth. When some of the ambassadors wanted the Stargate to be shared, Kinsey made a suggestion for the NID to be given control. Hammond was told that Kinsey was moving to intelligence oversight which would put him in control of the NID and thus the Stargate, so he contacted Thor to come and speak to the ambassadors about their relations with Earth which convinced the ambassadors to support the SGC keeping the Stargate. He sent O'Neill, Teal'c and SG-15 to P4S-237 to continue their mission to free the people from the Goa'uld Mot. After Jonas had a vision of the SGC being destroyed and of O'Neill and the others being ambushed, Hammond tried to contact them but they got no response. As a precaution he ordered lots of heavily armed and armored personnel into and around the gateroom to stop any invasion. (SG1: "Prophecy") He authorized SG-1 to go to Abydos to stop Anubis from finding the Eye of Ra. (SG1: "Full Circle")

Samantha Carter remarked that it was strange to see Hammond offworld. When Anubis targeted the Stargate, Hammond ordered the camp evacuated. (SG1: "Fallen") Jack O'Neill and Carter returned to Earth to report their mission a success but that Anubis had escaped. After Ambassador Dreylock contact the SGC for help, Hammond reminded her that they weren't going to help in their war but Dreylock let him know they were actually under attack from Anubis. Hammond authorized Carter to join him in the race and the rest of SG-1 to go to negotiate with the Hebridian government. (SG1: "Space Race") After Dr. Jay Felger caused a power loss at the SGC, Hammond considered cutting his research but he convinced him that he had something else good in the works. Carter looked over his idea, Avenger, and recommended that he be allowed to work on it and Hammond ordered Carter to participate. After testing it on P5S-117, numerous other Stargates began to stop working and trapped many teams offworld. Hammond authorized Carter and Felger to go to P5S-117 to disable the virus. (SG1: "New Order, Part 2") When a mission to Atlantis was prepared, Hammond decided to command it himself as he had sent too many personnel out and too many had never come back. He recruited Jackson and Walter Harriman for the mission. When they intercepted a distress signal, they went to investigate and a Kull Warrior boarded the ship and forced everyone off to an Al'kesh. Hammond had the crew repair the ship but they needed new Control crystals so Hammond went over to a nearby Tel'tak and managed to get the crystals but collapsed before reaching the Ring Transporter. He was rescued by Colonel Reynolds and survived. They caught up with the Prometheus and rescued it from Goa'uld forces, but the ship had become too damaged to continue onto Atlantis.
