"I suppose the Wraith had to evolve from something. It's probably some sort of, uh, prehistoric cousin."
- Meredith Rodney McKay - Thirty-Eight Minutes

The Iratus bug is a prehistoric ancestor of the Wraith.

Overview

The bug is about two feet in length, including a tail. It has several legs, a hard shell with a soft, leechy underside. It has no eyes and two sharp spines that it uses to attach to prey and feed. The bug causes intense pain to incapacitate prey and then causes paralysis as it feeds. If it is injured while feeding it can regenerate quickly. When the prey dies, the bug will detach. When exposed to salt water, it has an adverse reaction. They can create webs to help them catch prey. (SGA: "Thirty-Eight Minutes") They nest in cool, damp, dark places, hanging large sacs from the ceiling filled with eggs. The produce a pheromone that they use to identify one another. (SGA: "Conversion") There are Iratus bug queens. (SGA: "Infection")

History

The bugs are ancestors of the Wraith and were inadvertantly allowed to feed on humans by the Lanteans and they began to take on human aspects. (SGA: "The Gift") Hundreds of thousands of years ago, some Wraith would allow an Iratus bug queen to feed on them as a way to restore themselves to perfect health, which often resulted in the death of the Wraith. (SGA: "Infection") John Sheppard ran into an Iratus bug web and it attached itself to his neck. A Wraith came across him but did nothing as he knew that Sheppard was done for. Aiden Ford attempted to remove it by shooting it, stabbing it and burning it but it fed on Sheppard and regenerated. They tried a number of items on it and when they used salt and then water, it caused a bad reaction and the bug fed more on Sheppard. They used a defibrillator on Sheppard to stop his heart and the bug was able to be removed, where Ford shot it several times. It regenerated from its wounds but before it could attack, it was sucked out into space. (SGA: "Thirty-Eight Minutes")

Carson Beckett used Iratus DNA to create the Iratus bug retrovirus, designing it to attack Iratus DNA in Wraith and convert them into humans. (SGA: "Instinct") A team was sent to a planet where Iratus bugs lived in order to collect some eggs to create a cure for Sheppard who was being affected by the retrovirus but the team failed. Sheppard was able to come and collect some eggs as he was producing their pheromones and thus they ignored him. (SGA: "Conversion") Michael Kenmore brought some Iratus bugs to a planet to use them in the creation of Bug people, allowing the bugs to gorge on the Taranians and then altering the human DNA in their eggs. He later let one loose in a room with Teyla Emmagan but it was killed by Ronon Dex. (SGA: "Vengeance") Todd went to a planet to find an Iratus bug queen to feed on him and restore him to a normal Wraith after he used Keller's Gene therapy on himself. (SGA: "Infection")
