Sealing the Stargate

The Iris is a Tau'ri Stargate-sealing technology.

The Iris is made of Titanium and it strengthened with Trinium. (SG1: "A Matter of Time") It is located less than 3 micrometers from the event horizon, so close that it won't even allow matter to fully reintegrate. An object that hits the Iris produces a loud bang. A valid code from a Garage Door Opener needs to be sent before the Iris is opened for incoming travelers. (SG1: "Children of the Gods", "The Enemy Within") A Palm scanner is required for the Iris to be opened and closed. (SG1: "Show and Tell") The Iris can withstand temperatures of at least 780-1040 degrees Fahrenheit. (SG1: "Serpent's Song")

The Iris was installed after a team went back to Abydos as a precaution in case anymore hostile forces attempted to come to Earth. (SG1: "Children of the Gods") The Goa'uld sent several weapons or people through the Stargate after SG-1 and SG-2 came back from Chulak but they were all destroyed when they hit the Iris. (SG1: "The Enemy Within") Captain Jonas Hanson, who had been posing as a god to a group of people, was thrown by the people through the Stargate without a code being sent, killing him. (SG1: "The First Commandment") Gairwyn sent the Sagan Institute box to Earth and it was destroyed when it hit the Iris, leaving a detectable Iridium signature on it. (SG1: "Thor's Chariot") When SG-1 was returning after trying to capture an alien insect, one of them came through the Stargate just as the Iris was closing. (SG1: "Bane")

When Stargate Command dialed P3W-451 which was being sucked into a Black hole and they couldn't disengage the Stargate, the Iris was closed as the gravitational effects began to be translated through the Stargate and pull things through. Eventually the Iris was ripped apart and sucked in. A new Trinium strengthened Iris replaced it. (SG1: "A Matter of Time") The Tok'ra sent a Sagan Institute box that hit the Iris and was detected. (SG1: "Serpent's Song") The Reetou Mother used a computer to open the Iris when it was closed to allow Charlie to come through to Earth. To prevent anymore Reetou from accessing the Iris, Palm scanners were installed. (SG1: "Show and Tell") The Tollan Phase shifting device is capable of allowing people to pass through the Iris, Narim used one to send his cat Schrödinger to Earth to let them know that he was to follow. (SG1: "Pretense")

When the SGC tested a Naquadah bomb on another planet, the explosion created gamma radiation that translated through the Stargate and caused the Iris to heat up. (SG1: "Chain Reaction") When Teal'c became trapped in the Stargate, the Iris was shifted to prevent any wormhole from forming while it was closed. (SG1: "48 Hours")
