Portrayed by

Gary Jones

Chief Master Sergeant Walter Harriman is a male Tau'ri, a member of the United States Air Force and a member of Stargate Command.

He was stationed at Cheyenne Mountain Complex and dialed the Stargate to Abydos, tracking the box of tissues that Jack O'Neill sent through. When SG-1 and SG-2 dialed in from Chulak he reported that they had yet to receive a GDO code but then announced that a signal had come through. (SG1: "Children of the Gods") He was on duty in the control room when the Goa'uld controlling Charles Kawalsky came in and started dialing the Stargate to Chulak, when Harriman stepped in to stop him, he broke Harriman's arm. (SG1: "The Enemy Within") After Jack O'Neill, affected by a virus, attacked Daniel Jackson, Harriman called for security and joined in pulling him off Jackson. (SG1: "The Broca Divide") He was delivering a report to Major General George Hammond about a mineral survey when the an unscheduled traveler alert came on, he told Hammond that no one was due back. (SG1: "Fire and Water")

When the Tollans escaped from their quarters, he ran an augmentation on the surveillance video from the room showing them passing right through the wall. (SG1: "Enigma") As SG-1 were coming back shortly after leaving, he reported that the Stargate was drawing twice the power as normal and it was increasing and then that the system was overloading. When Jackson had a theory that O'Neill and Samantha Carter had come through another Stargate on Earth, Harriman check earthquake data across the world to locate where the second Stargate was located, there was one match in Antarctica. (SG1: "Solitudes") Harriman reported to Hammond that two objects had been detected moving past Saturn heading for Earth and that NASA was repositioning Hubble to get a better look at them. (SG1: "Within the Serpent's Grasp") The objects were found to be two Goa'uld Ha'taks and he reported to Hammond that a powerful energy burst came from the bridge of one of the ships, perhaps an indication as to why the ships hadn't attacked yet. SG-1, who were aboard the ships, managed to destroy both ships and Harriman reported that a giant fireball was seen in the nights sky around the world. (SG1: "The Serpent's Lair")

When SG-1 were imprisoned on P3R-636 and Jackson was trying to negotiate to get them out, Harriman reported to Hammond that they were receiving SG-1's remote code but no one was incoming and they were instead getting a radio signal. (SG1: "Need") When an Orb brought back to Earth began releasing radiation, O'Neill sent Jackson to the control room to tell them to dial back to the planet where it came from and Hammond had Harriman dial the Stargate; the orb produced spikes which anchored itself in the gateroom and Harriman asked Hammond what to do about the active Stargate. The orb began releasing an organism that spread through the base. Harriman later reported that the auto-destruct had activated by itself. When the computers went offline and rebooted, Harriman was ordered to dial P4G-881 immediately to allow the organisms to leave. (SG1: "Message in a Bottle")

SG-3 returned from a mission and Colonel Makepeace came running into the control room, asking Harriman where Hammond was. He later had a phone call with the President set up for Hammond. (SG1: "Into the Fire") He was on duty in the control room when the Edoran refugees began arriving through the Stargate and remarked later than the wormhole was losing stability. (SG1: "A Hundred Days") When a Replicator-controlled Biliskner was in orbit of Earth, Harriman reported that NORAD had not detected the ship yet. When the ship entered the atmosphere but began to break up, he reported what was happening. (SG1: "Nemesis") When an unscheduled offworld activation took place, Harriman reported that the Iris wasn't responding and that they were losing power across the base. Thor came through the Stargate and Harriman reported that power and the computers had come back online. (SG1: "Small Victories")

When the SGC was being contacted by an unknown person, Harriman reported that they had finally matched the frequency to allow them to communciate back. (SG1: "The Other Side") When the Stargate wouldn't work and an energy signal was detected identifying that a second Stargate was being used on Earth, Harriman looked over seismic records to try to locate it, finding a match in Siberia. (SG1: "Watergate") While testing a Naquadah bomb, Harriman reported that excess radiation was being sent back through the Stargate. (SG1: "Chain Reaction") Harriman was dialing the Stargate to P4X-347 and as it activated, Lt. Barber threw himself into the unstable vortex and killed himself. (SG1: "The Light") When the SGC dialed a planet and sent a MALP, a signal was sent back that overloaded the computers, causing the one Harriman was working at to explode and give him burns on his hands. He remarked that based on the damage to the control room his injuries could have been worse. (SG1: "Entity")

After O'Neill became trapped offworld, Harriman reported to Hammond that the second MALP they sent had been hit by zat fire and disabled. He controlled a UAV that was sent to help find O'Neill but they lost contact with it as well. (SG1: "The Fifth Man") He reported to Hammond that they had received a communication from a Tollan Long range communication device. (SG1: "Between Two Fires") Harriman was tasked with finding the Aschen homeworld and reported to Hammond that there was a 1 in 4 chance that it was P4C-970 that Hammond had locked out of the computer. (SG1: "2001") When SG-1 returned without Teal'c, Hammond ordered Harriman to dial P3X-116 and during the dialing process he reported that there was an unknown error showing up. He was told to stop the dialing procedure. (SG1: "48 Hours")

When an asteroid was found to be headed to Earth, SG-1 went to deliver a bomb to destroy it and Harriman reported to Hammond that the team had made contact. When the asteroid passed the fail safe point, Hammond ordered Harriman to join the last team headed for the Alpha Site. Fortunately the asteroid was taken care of and Earth was saved. (SG1: "Fail Safe") He worked on launching new missile weapons through the Stargate to take out Staff cannon placements on Latona. When Hammond had SG-3 return from Latona without SG-1, Harriman told Hammond that he was sure that SG-1 would find a way out. (SG1: "The Sentinel")

He was on duty when the Stargate activate but nothing came through, no travelers and no signals. He reported to Hammond that deep space watch detected no ships in orbit when they thought the incoming wormhole was to block escape during an attack. (SG1: "Redemption, Part 1") As the Stargate began to build up power, an Electromagnetic pulse device was used to try to stop whatever was causing it and Harriman activated the device but it caused feedback that damaged their computers. The Stargate was taken into space to safely detonate and Harriman reported that it worked. (SG1: "Redemption, Part 2") He reported to Hammond that the people who hijacked the Prometheus had appeared in a holding cell and two Air Force personnel and Julia Donovan had appeared in the commissary. (SG1: "Unnatural Selection")

When a device that was making people see Interdimensional creatures was taken back to P9X-391, he reported that no energy was being sent back through the Stargate from the device. When the Stargate shut down he called to Hammond to show him the creatures crawling over his station. (SG1: "Sight Unseen") When they were trying to dial into Abydos after it was attacked, he asked Carter how long they were going to keep trying and she snapped at him they would keep doing it until a Tok'ra flew over the planet in a ship to confirm everyone was dead. (SG1: "Full Circle") He came with Hammond to Vis Uban for a mission to launch an F-302 and attack Anubis' Mothership. (SG1: "Fallen") He helped Jackson go through gate activity logs when Jackson was looking for something. (SG1: "Orpheus")

He uploaded a program which was supposed to make Stargates work again after they were disabled by the Avenger virus and when it didn't work, Dr. Jay Felger asked him if he could upload better. (SG1: "Avenger 2.0") When a documentary film crew was at the SGC, he was interviewed and told them about his job. (SG1: "Heroes, Part 1") He later gave them a tour of the gateroom, explaining what various pieces of equipment were. (SG1: "Heroes, Part 2") He accompanied Hammond when he went to command the Prometheus during Anubis' attack on Earth. During a battle he reported that the F-302s had expended their ordnance. (SG1: "Lost City, Part 2")

When some System Lords came to Earth to discuss a treaty, he gave Dr. Elizabeth Weir a copy of the message they had received from the other System Lords. He later showed Jackson a copy of another message and after translating it Jackson told him to shut down the Stargate as the System Lords were leaving. When he asked why, Jackson shut it down himself. (SG1: "New Order, Part 1") He read a speech from the President for the ceremony for the promotion of Carter. (SG1: "New Order, Part 2") He served as an assistant to O'Neill when he became base commander and was happy when Mark Gilmor was assigned by the President to take on the role. He later had to examine the dialing computer with Dan Siler to find that they couldn't dial out. (SG1: "Zero Hour") He was working in the control room when Jackson was missing and they were attempting to contact him. (SG1: "Icon")

He showed Colonel Richard Kendrick to O'Neill's office and told him that Kendrick was there to meet with him. When Kendrick barged in, Harriman left the office as it was too late to stop him. (SG1: "Affinity") He was on duty at night when the Stargate disappeared from the base. He was interviewed by Jackson who wanted to know if anything suspicious happened. (SG1: "Endgame") He was working when an old IDC of Carter's was received and a message came through asking them to send a MALP. (SG1: "Gemini") He was recruited by Hammond to join the mission aboard the Prometheus to Atlantis. The ship was taken over by a Kull Warrior and the crew was forced to an Al'kesh and Harriman worked on repairing the ship. He later piloted the vessel and fired on Goa'uld forces to rescue the Prometheus. (SG1: "Prometheus Unbound") When Russian forces were on high alert, he reported that one of their missile silos was opening; he later reported it had closed and Russian forces were standing down. (SG1: "Full Alert") He was on duty when a message arrived through the Stargate from the Atlantis expedition. (SGA: "Letters From Pegasus")

He was with Siler as they waited in the gateroom for O'Neill to arrive after Ba'al had contacted them via hologram and he briefly attempted casual conversation with the Goa'uld. (SG1: "Reckoning, Part 1") An offworld activation occurred and the bases computers were hacked, with the Iris being opened and Replicators invading the base. Harriman communicated with O'Neill that Hammond was coordinating the shipment of a nuclear bomb to be dropped into the base to destroy it. (SG1: "Reckoning, Part 2") He received a communication from Thor that he was ready to beam up Carter and he went to report it to O'Neill, only for Carter to be beamed up before he could finish. After the base's auto-destruct system stopped seconds before it detonated, Harriman suggested it may have been a malfunction. (SG1: "Threads")

He was promoted to Chief Master Sergeant and greeted Cameron Mitchell when he arrived at the SGC, taking him to see Major General Hank Landry, the new base commander. (SG1: "Avalon, Part 1") He was contacted in the control room with orders to dial a planet and as the sequence was nearing completion, he heard Mitchell calling out "not yet" and briefly halted the dialing procedure. He continued it when told to and watched as Mitchell and Teal'c tossed an Ancient Long-range communication device into the Unstable vortex, destroying it. (SG1: "Origin") Landry asked Harriman to take his place in all the meetings he had to go to and just write up a report for him, much to Harriman's suprise. (SG1: "The Ties That Bind")

He let Landry know that they had received a message from Ba'al about a bomb in Seattle and he later said that the building was being evacuated. He helped coordinate the launch of a missile carrying Symbiote poison against a facility that Ba'al was hiding in. (SG1: "Ex Deus Machina") When Mitchell went missing, he helped run the search using a UAV. (SG1: "Babylon") He and Carter worked on examining Stargate data after Carter and SG-5 were sent to the wrong planet and then ran a program to override a device on P3X-584 that was redirecting them. (SG1: "Prototype") When Teal'c contacted from Dakara, Harriman called Landry to the control room. He later let Landry know that the White House had sent a communique for him. (SG1: "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1") As the PRIOR2 virus was spreading across Earth, he reported to Landry that the virus had been reported in Europe and Africa. (SG1: "The Fourth Horseman, Part 2")

He was sent by Dr. Carolyn Lam to deliver a report on a sample of blood from Mitchell that indicated that Mitchell had been stunned. (SG1: "Collateral Damage") He relayed to Landry that the Daedalus had left its location between the Milky Way and Pegasus to return to Atlantis, despite Landry ordering them to remain. (SGA: "Critical Mass") He was on duty when SG-1 returned early and later another SG-1 arrived. He later alerted Landry that yet another SG-1 IDC was being received. (SG1: "Ripple Effect") He was working when Jared Kane contacted the SGC to talk to Jackson. (SG1: "Ethon") He made repeated attempts to contact SG-1 but they were unable to connect to the Stargate the team had gone to. He reported to Landry that they had received a report from the Tok'ra that Stargates were being taken. After Landry let Nerus go in exchange for Ba'al's location, Harriman asked if Landry wanted him to dial the address but Landry said not to as it probably was a trap. When Harriman asked how they had got a transmitter onto Nerus without him knowing, Landry told him it was a piece of cake, which Harriman realized meant that they got Nerus to inadvertently eat it. (SG1: "Off the Grid")

After receiving a transmission, Harriman worked on cleaning it up to determine who had sent it. (SG1: "Arthur's Mantle") He was on duty when Dr. Weir dialed in from Atlantis to ask to relay a message to Teal'c. (SG1: "The Pegasus Project") He called Landry to the control room to report that an Al'kesh was detected entering Earth's atmosphere and headed for them. (SG1: "Insiders") He joined SG-1, Landry and O'Neill to go through the Stargate for Mitchell's 200th trip through the Stargate, telling Landry that the other SG teams had set up a celebration on the planet. (SG1: "200") When Landry was going to Dakara to confront the new Jaffa leader about his use of the Dakara Weapon, Harriman asked the General if he would be more comfortable taking a few marines. (SG1: "200") He received a request for information on an unknown woman, who was Vala Mal Doran, and passed it along to Landry. (SG1: "Memento Mori")

He was on duty when the Stargate was dialed from elsewhere a Puddle Jumper went through with Sheppard's team, Elizabeth Weir and Carson Beckett aboard. He asked Landry if he wanted him to work out where they went to but Landry said he already knew. (SGA: "The Return, Part 1") Landry had their IDC codes locked out. He was ordered by Landry to send a message to the Daedalus to enact the plan to destroy Atlantis. (SGA: "The Return, Part 2") When SG-1 were running a mission on Earth, Harriman noticed Landry checking his watch and asked if there was somewhere he needed to be, only to be glared at by Landry. (SG1: "Family Ties") He reported to Landry that sensors had detected seven Ori Warships arriving at Earth and that Colonel Abraham Ellis was contacting them. (Stargate: The Ark of Truth)

He searched for Meredith Rodney McKay's Subcutaneous transmitter but found it had been disabled. He found Ronon Dex in the commissary and began to talk to him, interrupting Ronon's meal for his stories. (SGA: "Miller's Crossing") A Wraith Stun device came through the gate and he and everyone else on the base was stunned. He awoke later to learn that Wraith were on the base. (SGA: "Midway") When IOA dignitaries were to be sent to the Alpha Site, the Stargate wouldn't connect and after trying other addresses, he reported to Carter that it wasn't working. He later reported that people were seeing a fireball streaking across the sky, that was actually Atlantis. (SGA: "Enemy at the Gate")

Homeworld Command

He was assigned to Homeworld Command. He reported to Jack O'Neill that Samantha Carter was contacting them. (SGU: "Air, Part 1") He later informed O'Neill that Nicholas Rush had made contact using the Tau'ri Long-range communication device. (SGU: "Air, Part 2")

Alternate Realities

Alternate Timelines

  • In an alternate timeline in the year 2010, Harriman served as operations tech advisor at the SGC, which was now a museum as the Stargate was public knowledge and had been moved. He ran into O'Neill, Carter and Jackson in the briefing room and saw that they had several Zat'nik'tels with them. He told them that President Kinsey had the only working GDO in his office. O'Neill convinced him to allow them to take what they had and that he would return it all in a few days. (SG1: "2010")
