Power supply

A Zero Point Module, often abbreviated to ZPM, is an Ancient power source.

Overview

ZPMs generate their power from vacuum energy derived from a self-contained region of subspace time. (SGA: "Rising") A ZPM is needed to power Ancient outposts. (SG1: "Lost City, Part 2") Atlantis can be powered by three ZPMs. (SGA: "Rising")

History

The Wraith obtained three ZPMs from Lantean ships which they used to power a Wraith Cloning facility. (SGA: "Spoils of War") A Lantean entrusted a ZPM to The Quindosim sect of monks who hid it on Dagan. (SGA: "The Brotherhood") Ra obtained a ZPM but never learned what it was, instead it was known as the 'Heart of Light" and used in ceremonies. It was taken by an alternate timeline SG-1 who placed it inside a tomb to be found in the future. (SG1: "Moebius, Part 1", "Moebius, Part 2") Camulus found an Ancient device powered by a ZPM but couldn't figure out how to work it so he applied a material to the ZPM so that if it was ever used it would explode. (SG1: "Zero Hour") SG-1 went to Praclarush and visited the Taonas outpost, recovering the ZPM there which was used to replace the dead ZPM at the Antarctic outpost. (SG1: "Lost City, Part 2") The ZPM was used to power the Stargate in order to reach Atlantis in the Pegasus galaxy. Two of the three ZPMs on Atlantis were depleted and the third one was reaching maximum entropy and soon failed. (SGA: "Rising") Camulus told Jack O'Neill where to find the ZPM he had tainted and his sabotage was discovered when the ZPM was exposed to Gamma radiation. A deal was made for Camulus to arrange for SG-1's freedom from Ba'al and give him the ZPM which he would use and it would kill him. O'Neill instead gave Camulus the dead ZPM. (SG1: "Zero Hour")

A ZPM was found on M7G-677 that was powering an Electromagnetic field generator but it was found to be almost depleted and was of more use powering the generator than Atlantis. (SGA: "Childhood's End") Meredith Rodney McKay came up with a theory to use the Stargate to loop energy and charge a dummy ZPM. (SGA: "Hot Zone") An alternate timeline Elizabeth Weir obtained a list of five planets which had ZPM's on it and gave it to her alternate self. (SGA: "Before I Sleep") Sheppard's team searched Dagan with help from the locals and recovered the ZPM but it was taken by the people who had reformed The Quindosim and hid it on another planet. (SGA: "The Brotherhood") In 2005 a tomb was discovered in Egypt and a ZPM was found inside before being sent to the SGC. (SG1: "Moebius, Part 2") The safety protocols on Atlantis were disabled so that when enough power was drained from the ZPM it would explode. The protocols were later re-engaged. (SGA: "Critical Mass")

The ZPM in the Tower was almost depleted and the city's Star Drive was activated in order to drain it completely and prevent the Control chair from controlling drones for an attack. (SGA: "The Tower") Ladon Radim offered to trade a ZPM to Atlantis for military supplies. When Sheppard and a team captured him, he revealed the ZPM was found by an operative long ago and stored away but had no more power. (SGA: "Coup D'etat") The Asurans had many ZPMs to power their city and McKay used the three aboard their city-ship to overload and destroy it. (SGA: "Progeny") The ZPM on Atlantis was drained in collapsing a Matter bridge to an Alternate Reality. (SGA: "McKay And Mrs. Miller") The Tria had a ZPM on it which was transferred to Atlantis when the crew claimed Atlantis. When the Asurans took control of the city, they installed two more ZPMs. (SGA: "The Return, Part 1", "The Return, Part 2") One of the ZPMs from Atlantis was sent to the Antarctic outpost to power the Control chair, another was installed on the Odyssey and the last remained on Atlantis. (SGA: "Echoes")

The ZPM on Atlantis began to lose power when the conduits in the city were damage and it began to pump out extra power. (SGA: "First Strike", "Adrift") A ZPM was stolen from Asuras to power the city again. (SGA: "Lifeline") A splinter group of Asurans took a ZPM from Asuras to use on the Atlantis duplicate. (SGA: "This Mortal Coil") A plan to destroy the Asurans had several ZPM's overload but when their power grid was destroyed, the plan was scrapped. (SGA: "Be All My Sins Remember'd") Todd sent Darts down to Asuras during the attack and stole a few ZPMs to be used in the cloning facility. (SGA: "Spoils of War") Todd had one of the ZPM's integrated into a Hive ship but he was betrayed and the ship was taken. He later revealed to Sheppard the location of two more ZPMs which were used to power up Atlantis to take it to Earth to engage with this Hive ship. (SGA: "Enemy at the Gate")
